New Year in France

New Year in France is better known as "Jour des Etrennes" which is celebrated on 1st January. On the occasion of New Year eve people of France host a special New Year feast called "le Reveillon de Saint-Sylvestre". People of France celebrate this promising day with great ceremony and show. It is one of the oldest festivals celebrated all over France. The New Year holidays in France ends on January 6 with and they celebrate it by cutting a special type of festive cake called "la galette des rois". People of France prefer to keep New Year a private affair. They spend their day by having dinner with their family members and they eat usual dishes like pancakes, foie gras and champagne as they believe this dinner brings opulence to the house.

In different region of France New Year is celebrated in unique style. Like in South Western France, there is a tradition to start the day by attending the mass in evening and involve yourself in the torchlight demonstration, and then people make their way towards the vineyards for gulping some wine. French also participate in the process of gift-giving as they consider it to have a positive effect on the coming year and on any other festival. On this special event people are greeted with New Year cards, cakes and goodies.
